Americans in Wartime Experience

Nils Mockler

World War II

Nils Mockler is a World War II Marine Corps veteran best known for his service as a Combat Intelligence Scout with the 4th Marine Division’s Tank Battalion. Born in the early 1920s, Mockler was determined to serve, enlisting in the Marines in 1944 at age 17 after being turned away the year before for being underage and underweight.

Mockler saw his first combat during the Battle of Iwo Jima in February 1945, one of the bloodiest battles in Marine Corps history. He landed on Iwo Jima on the first day of the invasion and played a key role in intelligence operations throughout the 36-day battle. Mockler witnessed the iconic flag raising on Mount Suribachi, describing it as the most inspiring moment of his life and a symbol of hope for all who saw it.

After the war, Mockler has remained active in commemorating the legacy of Iwo Jima and his fellow Marines, frequently sharing his experiences to honor those who served and sacrificed.
