Americans in Wartime Experience

Stephen Peth

Vietnam War

Stephen Peth is a highly decorated Vietnam War helicopter pilot renowned for his extraordinary service as a DUSTOFF (medevac) pilot. Originally studying to be a musician, Peth joined the Army in 1967 and was selected among top candidates for Army Aviation. Serving with the 159th Medical Detachment, he flew over 3,500 hours-nearly half in combat-and evacuated more than 3,000 patients, including 251 in just four days during one intense period.

Peth’s heroism under fire earned him the Silver Star, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Purple Heart, the Air Medal for Valor (with 40 Oak Leaf Clusters), and the Bronze Star. He was seriously wounded during a mission but returned to service after multiple surgeries, ultimately achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel over a 26-year military career.

In recognition of his valor and contributions, he was inducted into the DUSTOFF Hall of Fame in 2022.

After retiring from the Army and a civilian career, Peth dedicated himself to volunteering at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, supporting wounded warriors as a Red Cross Group Leader for over 16 years.  His unique experience as both a combat veteran and patient enables him to provide empathy and guidance to recovering service members.
